Royal Society Cook Memorial Medal
Bronze medal commissioned by the Royal Society to commemorate the death of Cook in 1779
England: Lewis Pingo Engraver, 1784. 43mm. The obverse depicting a bust of Cook in uniform with the inscription ‘IZC COOK OCREANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMVS’ [‘The Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas’], the reverse shows Fortuna leaning on a column with a sceptre in one hand and a rudder in the other, [‘Our Men Have Left Nothing Untried’]. 577 of these medals were struck in bronze.
