Depictions of the heads of six Māori men. The three upper figures were drawn in Sydney, by Alphonse Pellion, during his visit with the crew of Louis de Freycinet’s ship Uranie in November - December 1819; figure 2, Piro, is distinguishable by his dress, he wears a European shirt and braces. All three men wear their hair in European styles. The three lower heads are depictions of preserved heads (mokomokai) purchased in Sydney and taken back to France. The lower figures were drawn by S Leroy.
‘The prints are particularly interesting as being some of the rare examples of New Zealand prints in aquatint’ Ellis, Early Prints of New Zealand.
