Performed by Order of The Constituent Assembly, During the Years 1791, 1792, 1794 and 1794... London: John Stockdale 1800, first English edition. Two volumes bound as one. Vol.I. xxxii, 487p, [1]l., Vol.II. 344p, 105p of Appendix, Vocabulary of the Malays; Tables of the Route of the Esperance. [6]p of publishers’ adverts. 45 plates including frontispieces and large fldg Chart of the World exhibiting the Track of M.de La Perouse. Light toning throughout and a sprinkle of foxing. 220mm, bound in one book in a 19th century half leather binding with original red title label and gilt to spine.
Inscribed on the front endpaper to ‘Lt Col. W.E. Gudgeon C.M.G from [?] D Blaine, Rarotonga 24 May 04’.
No news had been received for three years from the Comte de la Perouse expedition, so a two-ship search and exploration party were organised and set out in 1791, no trace of the missing navigator was found.
Labillardiere gives the first scientific description of the New Zealand Flax and brought back several New Zealand plants. The plates include plants, birds, native peoples.
