Tipped in are two notes in Colenso's hand, one note of 14 lines beginnning Mrs Barbauld, writing in 1811 of “ the ingenious youth from "Ontario's Shore" who visits the ruins of London, says .....'
Anna Laetitia Barbauld was a prominent English Romantic poet, essayist.
The second note of 16 lines dated April 1891, beginning 'From Robert Montgomery's "Omnipresence of the Dietz" [published 1828], Describing London at midnight: ...' Ends 'Probably borrowed from Macaulay'.
Robert Montgomery (1807–1855) was an English poet and minister.
