Art+Object announces the auction event of 2024. Six paintings, one artist, one collector. On Monday March 25, Art+Object will auction the unique collection of Māori portraits by New Zealand’s most well-known artist Charles Goldie, collected by the late Neil Graham of Christchurch.
In 1979 Neil Graham, together with business partner Bruce Plested, founded the fledgling trucking business Mainfreight. The company is today the largest freight forwarder in New Zealand. Later in his life he became perhaps best known for his extraordinary generosity and philanthropy. Art lovers will instantly recognise the Martin Creed work Graham gifted to Christchurch which adorns the side of Christchurch Art Gallery Te puna o waihetū, a bold and optimistic assertion for the people of Christchurch in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2011. Compiled between 2005 and 2013, there are six portraits of Māori in the collection. The auction focuses solely on these works and comprises of just six lots.
