196 Rare Books including The John Mowbray Collection
Timed Auction
Closed: Apr 16, 2024 at 6 PM NZST
Auckland | 409 Lots
PLEASE NOTE: The buyer’s premium for this auction is 20% of the hammer price plus GST on the buyer’s premium (total of 23% of the hammer price). This is to be paid on top of any successful bid. The buyer must pay the full amount due not later than 5 days after the auction date.

The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition (some items may have a very short damage description or may be described with "AF", which means “all faults”). The estimates always reflect the condition of a lot. All property is sold “as is” without warranty of any kind by art+object. Bidders who are unable to inspect the items in person are welcome to request additional information at: info@artandobject.co.nz or 093544646.

Packing and courier options are available at buyer’s risk and expense. We’ll be in touch after the auction to arrange.

The link to our full Terms and Conditions can be found on the app menu or at the bottom of each page on the desktop website. We would recommend that first time and/or overseas bidders familiarise themselves with our Conditions, especially with our SUBJECT BIDS practice (point no. 11, which stands also for timed-online auctions).

Art+Object’s first auction of Rare Books for 2024 will be held exclusively online on Tuesday 16 April. The sale includes two important collections.

Leading collector John Mowbray established his philately career in 1965 and has risen to become a successful auctioneer and one of the preeminent figures in the field of stamps, rare coins, bank notes and medals in the southern hemisphere.

Art+Object are pleased to include John’s private book collection in this catalogue. Hooker’s ‘The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage Flora Novae Zelandiae. Part I. Flowering Plants. London: Lovell Reeve 1853.

The sale also includes an important collection of New Zealand literature from the library of dedicated collector Alex Twaddle. It features 1st editions by influential and internationally respected writers Katherine Mansfield and Janet Frame. New Zealand’s poets also feature largely in his library with early editions by R.A.K. Mason, A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, Allen Curnow, Sam Hunt and J.K. Baxter.
