Art+Object's first auction of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art for 2024 will be held on Wednesday 27 March, two days after the landmark auction of six paintings by Charles Goldie from the collection of Neil Graham. It will be on view alongside the collection of Goldie paintings at our Newton Gallery.

The March 27 auction includes several artworks of note and we are especially privileged to be offering several works from the estate of Murray Shaw, former chair of the Arts Council, a NZ on Air board member, trustee of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and sophisticated collector. Murray was a champion of the arts in Aotearoa New Zealand. Fiercely passionate and engaging, he was also a dedicated and discerning collector with a penchant for advanced abstraction and studio ceramics. His beloved Mrkusich painting, Painting Dark (1972) is a tour de force of the artist’s breath-taking and seminal ‘Corner’ paintings of the 1970s. Rich, moody and expansive, it is generous in the sense that only the best abstraction can be. Art+Object will also offer from his collection a 1968 painting by the American Abstract Expressionist, Edward Corbett whose works were presented into the seminal Dorthy Miller curated exhibition, 15 Americans at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1952.
